BOOTING OF COMPUTER: An operating system is an integrated set of programs that controls the resources (the CPU, memory, I/0 devices etc.) of a computer system and provides the interface between the user and the computer system.
Windows come under a special kind of software known as operating system and its work begins when the user turn on the computer.
All operating systems are stored on an external storage device and are loaded in the main memory immediately after the computer is switched on.
So booting can be defined as the process of loading an operating system into computer’s main memory. All operating systems are loaded automatically i.e. a user need not to give any command to load the OS.
The loading is accomplished by set of programs that are stored permanently in the ROM i.e. whenever the user turn the computer on, the processor automatically execute the part of operating system from hard disk into the computer’s main memory i.e. RAM and then pass the control to operating system.
The operating system remains in the main memory till you switch off or turn off the computer.
TYPES OF BOOTING OF COMPUTER
Booting is basically of two types:
- Cold Booting
- Warm Booting.
Cold Booting :
When we switch on the computer and allow it to perform its startup functions and load the operating system into the main memory.
This type of booting of a computer is known as cold booting and is a slow process. It is done only from the On/off switch button on the cabinet.
Warm Booting :
This type of booting is faster than cold booting. If the computer hangs or halts due to some reason, it may be necessary to reset it either by pressing reset button from the cabinet or by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del keys together from the keyboard.
The computer restarts and the booting of this type from the keyboard keys is known as warm booting.
Both the cold booting and the warm booting clear computer memory so if we have not saved our data, it will be lost in the process of rebooting the computer.
